Canal and stone bridge in a Jiangnan water town near Suzhou

This classic route across China is a starting point, not a fixed script. It balances imperial history, natural wonders and the energy of its cities — and every part of it can be reshaped around you. Extend a stay, swap a city, slow a morning: your itinerary is built from your interests, pace and dates, and only confirmed when it fits.

The journey

What you'll remember

  • The Bund before the crowds

A morning walk along the Huangpu, then the top deck of Shanghai Tower for the view from above.

  • Gardens built for one mood

The Humble Administrator's Garden, and I. M. Pei's Suzhou Museum next door — five centuries apart, the same restraint.

  • West Lake, then tea country

A skiff across the lake in the morning; an afternoon on the Nine Creeks path through the Longjing terraces.

  • A night on Huangshan

Sunset over the West Sea, sunrise above the cloud, and Hongcun's ponds on the way down.

We had already done Beijing and Xi'an and wanted something quieter. Suzhou and the tea village are the parts we still talk about. The train days were easy — someone met us at every platform.

★★★★★
Suzhou's gardens in the rain were better than any photo. Our guide swapped the order of the day so we had them nearly to ourselves.
Helen K. · United Kingdom · 9-day Jiangnan
★★★★★
The tea village afternoon was my favourite — sitting with the farmer, no rushing. It felt like visiting family.
Yuki & Ken · Japan · 9-day Jiangnan
★★★★★
Huangshan was cloudy the first morning and I was worried, then it cleared at sunrise. Our coordinator had already moved the cable car to the best time.
Robert D. · Canada · 9-day Jiangnan
★★★★★
Huangshan was the reason we booked, and it overdelivered, even in rain. Our coordinator moved the cable car booking when the weather turned, without us having to ask.

Frequently asked questions

Can I customize this itinerary?
Yes — every trip we run is built for the people taking it. Change the cities, the pace, the hotels or the number of days, and we re-quote. Nothing is locked until you approve it.
How much does this tour cost?
Because it is tailor-made, the quote depends on your dates, party size, hotel tier and the experiences you add. Send us a rough plan and you will have a written quote — no obligation.
Do I need a visa to visit China?
It depends on your passport. Many nationalities now travel visa-free or with a simplified e-visa, and the rules change often — we check the current position for you before you book flights.
What's included in the tour?
Private transport and guide, hotels, first-gate entrance tickets and the meals listed. International flights, visa fees and personal spending sit outside the quote; In / Exclusions has the full list.
How do I book and make payment?
Once you approve the itinerary we send written confirmation and a secure payment link. We accept PayPal, credit cards and bank transfer, with the balance due before departure.
How fit do I need to be for Huangshan?
Moderately. Cable cars cover most of the climb and the summit trails are stone steps with handrails — walk as much or as little as you like. If steps are difficult we can shorten the mountain and add a night in Hongcun instead.
